Although Sophocles' play was written 2500 years ago, the character of Antigone continues to synthesize some of the most delicate issues of our time. An absolute symbol of resistance, of the fight against the system, but also of empathy and sacrifice for the other, here is the tragic heroine appearing on the stage of the Sibiu National Theatre in times overshadowed by the imminence of war.

Based on Thomas Köck's text, “antigone. a requiem” sheds a cruel light on the social and political tensions of the moment, offering us an x-ray of inter-human conflicts and, possibly, a form of collective salvation. After the bodies of several strangers are discovered on the banks of the Thebes, spirits heat up as the protagonists split into two camps: on the one side there is Creon who refuses to take responsibility for some dead that are not “his”; on the other hand, Antigone, who wants to honour the memory of the unfortunate. But the young woman's stubbornness will come at a price.

Director Florin Vidamski balances the values of a consumerist society, which is devoid of moral benchmarks, in order to finally express a manifesto of devotion to humanity. The audience is invited to attend a witty and non-conformist performance, an immersive theatrical installation, by taking the stage alongside the characters for a complete sensory experience.
